Montclair Reassessment Causes Rise In Tax Assessments For Some

With the decline the housing market, Montclair property owners have filed 3,724 tax appeals since 2007. The appeals reduced the assessed value only on the properties whose owners successfully appealed. With only a portion of properties being adjusted to market value, an unfair shift in the tax burden was created that could only be adjusted through a township-wide reassessment.

Since reassessments adjust properties to market value, the properties whose assessments were closer to market value prior to the reassessment will see an increase in their tax burden….

To combat the dramatic increase in the number of tax appeals being lost by the borough in recent years, a reassessment, which involves inspecting all of the town’s properties to ensure fair and equitable value assessments, was approved by council last fall and conducted over the winter by Appraisal Systems, Inc. for $371,500.

Tax Appeals In New Providence Has Town Dipping Into Reserves

Among the issues the New Providence Borough Council discussed at its June 25 meeting was a multi-million dollar reassessment of a property in the borough.

Council President Michael Genarro gave a run down on a tax appeal settlement for 41 Spring Street LLC. No information was available on the owners of 41 Spring Street LLC.

NEW PROVIDENCE There were appeals from 2008 through 2012, but the 2008 and 2010 appeals were withdrawn and the 2009 appeal was dismissed, he told the council….
